Precursors of Gamma-ray Bursts: a Clue to the Burster’s Nature
نویسندگان
چکیده
In relativistic strongly magnetized winds outflowing from the fast-rotating compact progenitors of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) there are three regions where powerful high-frequency emission may be generated: (i) the thermal photosphere, (ii) the region of the internal wind instability and (iii) the region of the wind interaction with an ambient gas. This results in a multicomponent structure of GRBs. The emission from the thermal photosphere may be observed as a weak precursor to the main burst. The precursor should have a blackbody-like spectrum with the mean energy of photons of ∼ 1 MeV, and its intensity should be tens to hundreds of times smaller than that of the main GRB emission. Observations of such precursors with future γ-ray missions like GLAST can clarify the nature of bursters. Subject headings: gamma-rays: bursters stars: neutron magnetic fields radiation mechanisms

Optical afterglows of gamma–ray bursts: a bimodal distribution?
The luminosities of the optical afterglows of Gamma Ray Bursts, 12 hours (rest frame time) after the trigger, show a surprising clustering, with a minority of events being at a significant smaller luminosity. If real, this dichotomy would be a crucial clue to understand the nature of optically dark afterglows, i.e. bursts that are detected in the X–ray band, but not in the optical. We investiga...
متن کاملThe birth place of gamma-ray bursts: abundance gradients and constraints on progenitors
The physics of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) and their offsets from the centers of their host galaxies are used to investigate the evolutionary state of their progenitors, motivated by the popular idea that GRBs are linked with the cataclysmic collapse of massive stars. We suggest that GRB progenitors in the inner and outer regions of hosts may be intrinsically different: outer bursts appear to have ...
متن کاملAre there cosmological evolution of Gamma-Ray Bursts?
The variability of gamma-ray burst (GRB) is thought to be correlated with its absolute peak luminosity, and this relation had been used to derive an estimate of the redshifts of GRBs. Recently Amati et al. present the results of spectral and energetic properties of several GRBs with know redshifts. Here we analyse the properties of two group GRBs, one group with known redshift from afterglow ob...
متن کاملPrecursors and Main-bursts of Gamma Ray Bursts in a Hypernova Scenario
We investigate a ”hypernova” model for gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), i.e., massive C+O star model with relativistic jets. In this model, non-thermal precursors can be produced by the ”first” relativistic shell ejected from the star. Main GRBs are produced behind the ”first”-shell by the collisions of several relativistic shells. They become visible to distant observers after the colliding region bec...
متن کاملPair Cascades and Precursors in Gamma-Ray Bursts
Gamma-ray burst sources with a high luminosity can produce electron-positron pair cascades in their environment as a result of back-scattering of a seed fraction of their original hard spectrum. The resulting spectral modifications offer the possibility of diagnosing not only the compactness parameter of the γ-ray emitting region but also the baryonic density of the environment external to the ...
